AUSTIN, Texas -- The Covenant men's basketball team concluded its trip to Texas by shooting 60 percent from the field but falling, 103-96, at Concordia (Texas) on New Year's Day in Austin.
The loss was the third straight for Covenant (5-6).
Will Crumly recorded a fourth straight double-double as he tallied 30 points and 11 rebounds. It was the second consecutive 30-plus point effort from Crumly, the first time a Covenant player has scored 30 or more points in back-to-back games since 2006. James Mitchell added a career-high 29 points, with a career-high tying nine 3-pointers, while Bailey Spragg had 15 points, a career-high 12 assists, and seven steals.
The Scots shot 60 percent (36-of-60) from the field for the second time this season. Even with that percentage, Covenant had a hard time slowing the host Tornados.
After Covenant grabbed a 5-0 lead early on, Concordia (4-9) went on a 24-8 run to take a 24-13 lead with 11:43 left in the first half. The Scots regained the lead after a 16-2 spurt, that covered nearly five minutes, put Covenant ahead 29-26 after a Mitchell triple with 6:50 remaining.
The teams traded blows for the rest of the half until the Tornados scored eight points in the final 39 seconds of the period to go ahead 57-46 at the break.
Concordia took its biggest lead of the day (72-58) with 12:27 left, but Covenant came storming back. The Scots outscored Concordia 22-7 over a span of five-and-a-half minutes and took an 80-79 lead as Mitchell drained 3-pointers on three straight possessions with 6:53 to go.
Back-to-back 3-pointers from Detarrius Kirk gave the Tornados the lead for good with over five minutes left.
Covenant got within four in the final minute, but the Tornados secured the win at the foul line down the stretch.
Noah Oetjen chipped in 10 points with three assists for the Scots and Mitchell Hollis had a career-high nine assists. The Scots had a season-high 28 assists on 36 made field goals. In addition to shooting 60 percent from the field, Covenant made 12 3-pointers and went 12-of-15 at the free throw line.
Concordia converted 25 Covenant turnovers into 39 points, with 24 fastbreak points. Joe Neal led all scorers with his 34 points to go along with 10 rebounds and five assists. Philip Meikle scored 22 points with five steals and Kirk added 17 points off the bench. The Tornados shot 57.1 percent (32-of-56) for the game with nine 3-pointers and were 30-for-38 at the free throw line.
Covenant gets back into USA South play on Saturday with a trip to Misenheimer, N.C., to face Pfeiffer. Game time is slated for 2 p.m.
