Women’s Basketball Falls to Maryville, 82-70

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant women's basketball team fell to Maryville, 82-70, on Wednesday night in USA South action inside Barnes PE Center.

Covenant drops to 5-12 overall and 3-6 in the USA South. Maryville moves up to 8-10 overall and 6-3 in the USA South.

Covenant started quickly. In the first two minutes, Kaley Hallmark and Taylor Robinson grabbed back-to-back steals, converting both for points to put Covenant up 8-3. Despite the hot start, Covenant trailed by two (22-20) at the end of the first quarter as Maryville made six 3-pointers.

Maryville went on a 9-0 scoring run to start the second period, making it 31-20. The visitors maintained a comfortable lead for the remainder of the half and led 44-33 at the break. The northern Scots posted an impressive 58.8 percent (10-of-17) 3-point percentage.

Covenant came out strong in the third period, outscoring Maryville 21-12. A Raquel Rosa three-point play brought Covenant within four at 3:42, making it 52-48. Covenant continued the run and evened the score at 54-54 on a Margo Koby bucket that capped the 13-4 spurt.

To start the final quarter Bekah Walter drove in for a layup at 9:15 to tie it 56-56. Maryville responded by going on an 11-2 run to take a 67-58 lead with 3:37 remaining. Covenant got as close as five after Walter drained a long jumper with 1:57 on the clock to make it 70-65.

Maryville went 12-of-18 from the foul line in the final two minutes to seal the win.

Walter led Covenant with 17 points. Joanna Smith had 12 points and six rebounds, while Rosa had 10 points, eight rebounds, and four steals, and Hallmark had nine points and six rebounds. Robinson had a team-high four assists.

Covenant shot 40.8 percent (31-of-76) from the field. The Scots had 17 steals as a team, led by Robinson's five, and slightly outrebounded Maryville 41-38.

Maryville had four players with double digit points, Kelley Wandell with 20, Brooke McCurdy with 18, Libby Gardner with 14, and Klaire Varney with 13. McCurdy was 6-of-10 from the 3-point line. Maryville shot 43.1 percent (25-of-58) from the floor.

Covenant will travel to Montgomery, Ala., to face Huntingdon on Saturday at 5 p.m. EST.
